Betty and Fred were among our parents’ oldest and closest friends, having met when Betty and Fred were living in Singapore. We children grew up with Jude, Helen, David and John and have many happy memories of family holidays together. Even after they moved back to the UK, Betty and Fred maintained their strong friendship with our parents, going on holidays together and standing in loco parentis when David, Anne and Susie started university in London. Our parents really enjoyed spending time with Betty and Fred. My father, especially relished the many spirited discussions he had with Betty on politics and every other topic you can think of; he enjoyed the fact that Betty was always willing to take him on and that their discussions always ended in good humour, often with Betty’s infectious laugh. Our mother, on the other hand, valued the many (quieter) chats she had with Betty, catching up with each other’s news and talking about family, cooking, sharing reminiscences. Some of the memories we children have of Betty: - family meals at the Kampfners with Betty’s delicious food and the lively and varied discussions, often instigated by Betty, around the dinner table. It was always a treat for us to join the Xmas celebrations, especially with Betty’s cooking! - Betty zipping around in her yellow VW sports car - Betty’s laughter and sense of humour - Betty’s strength and determination - the story of how Betty and Fred met and the many many obstacles they overcame to be together - the very tangible and evident love Betty had for Fred and vice versa and the warm and loving home they created for the family - Betty watching TV with Elexis and sharing chocolate biscuits with her Betty, we will remember you and hold you in our hearts.
